The total count of victims due to the freight aircraft which caught fire and crashed has reached 13, according to recent reports.
Official's Announcement
Traveling to the Union’s memorial service, I learned of a thirteenth victim that died as a result of the plane accident,” wrote the municipal leader in a online message. “My heart is with the loved ones, companions and colleagues of all who were lost in this recent disaster. We will endure this together.”
Victims Named
An announcement from UPS listed the officers operating the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.
“Our hearts reach out to all employee who has been impacted and everyone in our local community – helping you and guaranteeing you receive the attention and resources you need is our focus,” the organization’s statement read.
Investigation Findings
Federal authorities disclosed that the jet’s port side wing ignited and an engine detached just after liftoff from the aviation hub, resulting in the plane to fall and erupt into a blaze.
The National Transportation Safety Board stated it is examining the plane’s maintenance history, which was in the state for repairs several weeks prior to the crash.
Aviation information revealed the plane was on the runway in that location from 3 September to 18 October.
“We are aware that this plane was located in the facility,” remarked an official on Thursday, not giving a precise time frame. “We will examine each aspect of maintenance that was performed, from the Texas visit, straight to the time of the trip.”
Findings of Vital Components
The audio device and flight data recorder were found, and the motor was discovered on the tarmac.
The recorders – known as black boxes – were designed to withstand accident forces and intense fire from fires, and they looked to be intact when located amid the wreckage. Authorities intend to reviewing recordings from the devices.
Jet’s final data recordings showed an elevation of 475 ft and a velocity of that speed ahead of the impact.
Maintenance Background
According to Federal Aviation Administration documents dated 18 September, a crack on a part within the center wing fuel tank required fixes.
Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which indicated it supplies airframe maintenance for the carrier’s jet and manages a repair facility in San Antonio, declined to speak, but stated it would work closely when investigators approached it.
Activities Restart
In the meantime, the hub operations continued last night with its Next Day Air or evening process, representative a representative said. Each of the three tarmacs at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also open again.
The distribution hub in this location is the firm’s largest. The hub engages in excess of 20,000 workers in the area, processes numerous aircraft each day and sorts over 400,000 items each hour.
Local Reaction
A gathering was organized on the night of that date by the local Teamsters Union, which acts for employees at the aviation hub, the firm’s primary freight center.
The union chapter, which supports UPS workers, began the vigil with a moment of silence at 5.14pm, the estimated hour of the incident before.
“This tragedy was so sudden, so surprising,” the mayor spoke to the group of attendees. “No one had a moment to bid farewell to each of those who we have lost.”
