Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications should be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
